Sozopol is the oldest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The churches in the ancient part of the city are distinguished for their old icons, marvelous wood-carved iconostases in the style of the Bulgarian old-time crafts. The specific architecture of the Sozopol renaissance houses is very impressive.
The city is a lively artistic and cultural centre – a favorite place of the artists. In September the traditional cultural festival “Apollonia” is held in Sozopol which gathers together the contemporary talents of Bulgaria. A popular destination is also St. John island which can be reached by boat. An unforgettable trip may be carried out along the Ropotamo river which fascinates with its beautiful virgin nature and one of the most attractive rocky formations in Bulgaria – the Lion’s head. Today Sozopol is one of the leading tourist centres in the country, combining antiquity with contemporaneousness. It attracts a large number of foreign tourists from the UK, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, France. The artistic atmosphere abundant in cultural monuments and events places it among the favorite cities of the tourists.
